NBA Cancels Hawks' Strip Club Theme Night After Backlash

The National Basketball Association has officially cancelled a controversial theme night planned by the Atlanta Hawks that was intended to celebrate the city's famous Magic City strip club. The league announced the decision on Monday, citing widespread concerns from fans, partners, and employees.

League Responds to Stakeholder Concerns

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver released a statement explaining the league's position. "When we became aware of the Atlanta Hawks' scheduled promotion, we reached out to Hawks leadership to better understand their plans and rationale," Silver said. "While we appreciate the team's perspective and their desire to move forward, we have heard significant concerns from a broad array of league stakeholders, including fans, partners and employees. I believe canceling this promotion is the right decision for the broader NBA community."

Player Opposition Influences Decision

The cancellation came after San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet publicly criticized the planned event in a Medium post. Kornet argued that celebrating a strip club "would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society."

Kornet emphasized the league's responsibility to create inclusive environments. "We desire to provide an environment where fans of all ages can safely come and enjoy the game of basketball and where we can celebrate the history and culture of communities in good conscience," he wrote. "The celebration of a strip club is not conduct aligned with that vision."

Golden State Warriors center Al Horford, who played nine seasons for the Hawks, supported Kornet's position by reposting the letter with the caption "Well said Luke."

Planned Celebration Details

The Hawks had announced the promotion last month, describing Magic City as an "iconic cultural institution" in Atlanta. The planned event was scheduled for next Monday's game against the Orlando Magic and would have featured:

  • Magic City's famous lemon pepper wings
  • A live music performance by Atlanta native rapper TI
  • Exclusive merchandise celebrating the venue

Hawks principal owner Jami Gertz, who produced a five-part docuseries about Magic City, had expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. "This collaboration and theme night is very meaningful to me after all the work that we did to put together 'Magic City: An American Fantasy,'" Gertz said when announcing the promotion. "The iconic Atlanta institution has made such an incredible impact on our city and its unique culture."

Cultural Significance Versus League Values

Magic City holds significant cultural importance in Atlanta's music and entertainment scene. Numerous celebrities including rappers Drake, Quavo, and 2 Chainz have praised its impact, while basketball legends Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal have visited the establishment. The venue even hosted Atlanta United's MLS championship celebration in 2018.

Despite this cultural relevance, the NBA determined that the theme night conflicted with the league's values and commitment to creating family-friendly environments. The Hawks organization had no immediate comment following the league's cancellation announcement.

This decision highlights the ongoing tension between celebrating local cultural institutions and maintaining professional sports leagues' broader community standards and family-oriented branding.
