Millie Turner on health battle comeback: 'I've never had a plan B'

Manchester United and England defender Millie Turner has opened up about her remarkable comeback from a serious health scare, insisting she never considered an alternative career to football. The 29-year-old, who made her senior England debut in 2024, was diagnosed with carotid artery dissection in 2022, a tear in a main artery that can increase stroke risk.

Turner, who grew up in Manchester and joined United in 2018, recalled the frightening symptoms that emerged over Christmas 2021. 'My speech was blurred, I was mixing words up, I could feel my heartbeat in my ear, and my vision wasn't right,' she said. After scans confirmed the dissection, she faced six months of strict limitations, including no football and keeping her heart rate below 120 beats per minute.

The defender admitted she feared her career might be over. 'It 100% crossed my mind, especially after doctors said there was a high risk of stroke,' she said. However, the artery healed naturally, and she broke down in tears upon receiving the news. 'It was such a huge relief after a really tough time,' she added.

Turner's England debut came in February 2024, a 5-1 win over Italy, with her father watching from the stands. 'It's what I've worked a long time for, and having my dad there made it even more special,' she said. She also reflected on her journey with Manchester United, having been in the club's academy before a women's team existed. 'Every time I put the shirt on, I play with so much pride,' she said.
