Michigan Coach Sherrone Moore Jailed After Firing Over Staffer Relationship

Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore remained in jail on Thursday morning, a day after being fired for an 'inappropriate relationship with a staff member,' according to university officials. The Washtenaw County Jail did not disclose details of his detention, bond, or any scheduled court appearances.

Pittsfield Township Police said they responded to an alleged assault in the area, taking a person into custody. While not naming Moore, police stated the incident was not random and posed no ongoing public threat. The individual was jailed pending a review of charges, with further details withheld to protect the investigation's integrity.

Michigan fired Moore for cause, citing a clear violation of university policy. Athletic director Warde Manuel said the university has zero tolerance for such behavior. Moore, 39, married with three daughters, did not comment. His contract, worth $5.5 million annually, will not be bought out due to the firing for cause.

Moore had a 9-3 record this season after an 8-5 debut, following Michigan's 2023 national championship. He succeeded Jim Harbaugh, who left for the NFL. The Wolverines will face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31, with Biff Poggi serving as interim coach.

Moore previously served suspensions related to NCAA violations, including a sign-stealing scandal. He deleted a text thread with former staffer Connor Stalions, later recovered by the NCAA. Michigan now seeks its third head coach in four years.
