Michael Owen has predicted that Arsenal will retain their Premier League title this season, with Liverpool and Chelsea their closest challengers. The former Liverpool and Manchester United striker named his top-six finish in an interview with Metro.
Arsenal favourites after title triumph
Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for the league title last season, finishing top after three consecutive second-place finishes. Mikel Arteta's side have strengthened with the signings of Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier, plus the marquee arrival of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United. However, they are still looking for a left winger after missing out on Vinicius Junior, and a back injury to William Saliba has prompted them to consider defensive reinforcements.
Owen believes Arsenal should be considered favourites but expects a challenge. 'I think there can be a few title challengers this season,' he said. 'You look at Arsenal's points tally and it wasn't in the nineties so they only have to drop a little and with Chelsea not in Europe, they can mount a challenge.'
New managers at rivals
Liverpool and Chelsea have both appointed new managers after poor domestic campaigns last season. Andoni Iraola has replaced Arne Slot at Liverpool, while Xabi Alonso has taken over at Chelsea. Enzo Maresca has returned to Manchester City, and Tottenham have signed well under Roberto De Zerbi.
Owen backed Liverpool and Chelsea to push Arsenal closest. 'Last season at Liverpool wasn't great, the style of play wasn't as good as it had been and they conceded far too many goals,' he said. 'But Slot leaving and Iraola replacing him means a new style of play. He brings a lot of excitement from the way he played at Bournemouth, but Liverpool are a much bigger club and the pressure mounts up now.'
Owen's top-six prediction
Owen also expressed concerns about Manchester United, who are preparing for their first full season under Michael Carrick. He fears the added demands of Champions League football could cost them in the league. 'I don't think the squad is there right now,' he said. 'They need to add a few more players to cope with the increased demands of all competitions, especially the Champions League.'
His predicted top-six for the season is: Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham.
