Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes Scott McTominay would be a perfect fit for Liverpool, likening the Scotland international to Steven Gerrard. The Dutchman praised McTominay's energy and goal threat, saying he would suit Andoni Iraola's Anfield revolution.
Meulensteen's admiration for McTominay
Meulensteen, who was part of Sir Alex Ferguson's backroom team for six years, would love to see the 29-year-old return to Old Trafford and work with Michael Carrick. However, he also thinks McTominay would be ideal for a controversial move to United's old rivals, with Curtis Jones rumoured to be leaving for Inter Milan.
Speaking to Tipman Tips, Meulensteen said: "Scott McTominay has Gerrard-esque qualities and would suit Liverpool perfectly, he's one of those midfielders that can get you goals. Now how many of those midfielders are around today? He brings physicality, energy, drive, courage, goals, and makes good box runs."
McTominay's career since leaving United
McTominay made 255 appearances for Manchester United before moving to Napoli in 2024, where he won the Serie A title and the league's player of the year award in his first season. He left United after struggling to establish himself as a regular under Erik ten Hag but has since become a key figure for the Italian side.
The 73-times capped Scotland international has two years left on his deal in Italy, although Napoli are reportedly ready to offer a bumper contract extension. Meulensteen added: "I've been very impressed with him since he left because that could have easily been the start of his career fizzling out. But with Scott it's the total opposite, he has bloomed and come to life."
