Rory McIlroy finished tied for second at the Genesis Invitational after a brilliant final round, but his post-tournament humour stole the spotlight. The Northern Irishman closed with a 67, including two birdies, to finish one shot behind winner Jacob Bridgeman on 17 under par.
Despite some cold putting that cost him birdie chances on the front nine and a near-miss at the 14th, McIlroy sank a 30-foot putt on the 18th. When asked if it felt bittersweet to make the putt after the title had slipped away, he laughed: 'No, not really. It probably earned me an extra $400k (£300k) so it was fine.'
The final birdie moved McIlroy into a tie for second with American Kurt Kitayama, sharing the prize money for second and third. Instead of earning $1.4m (£1.05m) for third, he took home $1.8m (£1.35m).
Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy said: 'I think I only had three bogeys all week. My game feels in really good shape. I'm looking forward to getting on some Bermuda greens over the next couple of weeks.' He added that his game is 'much better than it did in Dubai' and that he's looking ahead to Bay Hill and The Players.
