Rory McIlroy Reassessing Masters Plans After Players Championship Disappointment
McIlroy Reassessing Masters Prep After Players Championship

Rory McIlroy is carefully reconsidering his preparation strategy ahead of his Masters title defence next month following a lacklustre performance at the Players Championship. The defending champion at TPC Sawgrass struggled with a back injury during the event, which significantly hampered his play and resulted in a disappointing tie for 46th place.

McIlroy's Fitness Evaluation

The world number two golfer plans to take stock of his physical condition in the coming days before making any decisions about competing in another tournament prior to the Masters. McIlroy emphasised the importance of assessing how his body responds to a full practice schedule and gym work.

Post-Tournament Reflections

"I'll see how my body feels," McIlroy stated after the Players Championship. "We'll see how I feel in practice and at home and if I get itchy feet at home maybe add an event at some point."

The Northern Irishman noted that despite the disappointing scores over the weekend, he felt his game showed gradual improvement throughout the tournament. "I feel like my game sort of progressively got a little bit better as the week went on, even though the scores probably didn't reflect it over the weekend," he explained.

Looking Ahead to Augusta

McIlroy's decision carries significant weight as he prepares to return to Augusta National, where he completed the career grand slam last year. The golfer expressed satisfaction with having completed all four days of competition at Sawgrass despite his physical challenges.

"I feel like it was important to make the weekend here and play an extra couple of days," McIlroy commented. "I'm happy I got through four days and my body feels good."

The coming week will be crucial as McIlroy monitors his physical response to resumed training before finalising his pre-Masters schedule. His performance at the Players Championship has clearly prompted a thorough review of his preparation approach for one of golf's most prestigious tournaments.
