Rory McIlroy is considering whether to add another tournament to his schedule ahead of his Masters title defence next month, following a disappointing performance at the Players Championship. The Northern Irishman, who was defending champion at TPC Sawgrass, managed only a tie for 46th place after his preparations were disrupted by a back problem.
McIlroy intends to assess his physical condition over the coming days before deciding whether to compete again prior to travelling to Augusta, where he completed the career grand slam last year. 'We'll see how I feel in practice and at home and if I get itchy feet at home maybe add an event at some point,' he said.
The world number three expressed satisfaction with completing four rounds at Sawgrass despite the back issue. 'I feel like it was important to make the weekend here and play an extra couple of days. I'm happy I got through four days and my body feels good,' he added.
McIlroy noted that his game improved as the week progressed, even if the scores did not reflect it. He will now monitor his recovery and return to a full practice schedule before making a final decision on his Masters preparation.
