Manchester United's young talent JJ Gabriel is currently ineligible to play in the Premier League due to age restrictions, a situation that mirrors Arsenal's Max Dowman's earlier career. Premier League rules require players to be at least 15 years old by August 31 to compete, meaning Gabriel, who turned 15 last October, must wait before making his first-team debut.
Dowman, now 16, faced similar constraints last year. He made history by scoring against Everton last weekend, becoming the youngest player ever to score in the Premier League and surpassing Cesc Fabregas' Arsenal record. However, he had to wait until August 2025 to debut after turning 16, coming on against Leeds United and earning a penalty.
Gabriel has been training with the first team and has impressed with 15 goals in 20 under-18 appearances this season, plus three caps for England's under-16s. Interim boss Michael Carrick confirmed his ineligibility, stating: 'He's not allowed, he's too young. He's doing really well, JJ.'
Gabriel has a narrow window to break a 70-year-old club record held by former goalkeeper David Gaskell, who debuted at 16 years and 19 days in the 1956 FA Charity Shield. To surpass this, Gabriel must debut within the first eight weeks of the 2026/27 season, requiring him to maintain form, avoid injury, and impress the new manager.
