Max Dowman became the Premier League's youngest ever goalscorer as Arsenal came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium, a result that strengthens their title challenge. The 16-year-old, who has yet to take his GCSEs, scored the decisive goal in stoppage time after Viktor Gyökeres had earlier equalised.
Everton took the lead through a well-worked move, with Iliman Ndiaye causing problems down the left. David Moyes' side were organised and physical, making life difficult for Arsenal. James Garner, Idrissa Gueye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall all impressed, and Dwight McNeil hit the post in the first half.
Arsenal pushed for an equaliser and got it when Gyökeres tapped in after Jordan Pickford's save rebounded off Piero Hincapié. Then, with time almost up, Dowman was introduced as a substitute. He picked up the ball on the halfway line, dribbled past two defenders and rolled the ball into an empty net after Everton had pushed everyone forward for a corner.
Manager Mikel Arteta described the moment as 'incredible' and said it felt like 45 seconds as Dowman ran through. The win moves Arsenal closer to their first Premier League title in 22 years, with only Chelsea having a better away record than Everton before the match.
Everton had chances to win the game, with Ndiaye forcing a save from David Raya and McNeil hitting the post. But Arsenal's resilience and Dowman's moment of magic proved decisive.
