Nemanja Matic has highlighted a major difference between Manchester United and Chelsea, accusing United of prioritising brand value over silverware. The former midfielder, who played for both clubs, contrasted the trophy-driven culture at Chelsea with what he saw as a more commercial-minded approach at Old Trafford.
Matic's Trophy-Laden Chelsea Years vs United Drought
Matic won two Premier League titles during a successful spell at Chelsea before joining Manchester United for £40 million in 2017. However, his five seasons at Old Trafford ended without a single trophy, a stark contrast to his achievements in west London.
Speaking about the difference he noticed after his move, Matic said: "The difference I felt after Chelsea was that, at Chelsea, everything was about the result and winning trophies. That was the spirit in the whole club, even from the man who cuts the grass."
United's Commercial Focus
Matic added that Roman Abramovich, Chelsea's former owner, would only ask about results, whereas United's approach was different. He explained: "Roman Abramovich would only ask us about results. At United, it was more commercial-minded. I started to think that after a couple of months in the club."
Reflecting on United's failure to win silverware during his tenure, Matic said: "We did our best every single year, the players, the coaches, but we didn't win. If I compare how we did with United now, then we did great, but of course, United cannot be happy finishing second. United need to be winning leagues. We gave it our best and sometimes we'd get criticised, but I didn't see any major problems in the club."
Club's Current Struggles
The comments come as United prepare to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Michael Carrick set to remain in the dugout after being given more time to turn around the club's poor form. United have won just one league game this season and recently dropped captain Bruno Fernandes for their 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth following his public criticism of Carrick's tactics after a 4-1 loss to Como.
Fernandes' outburst prompted Paul Scholes to suggest his United career may be over. Scholes said: "What Bruno Fernandes said last week, I think that's unforgivable. How can Bruno Fernandes be trusted to be captain of any team he ever goes to now? I think he probably needs to get away from European football and just go to Saudi, just get out the way. I don't think any manager, any member of staff can trust him after that."
