Mark Chapman kicked off the first Saturday night edition of Match of the Day after Gary Lineker's departure, joking about the show's changes. The 51-year-old, who now rotates presenting duties with Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan, quipped that Wayne Rooney had joined as a regular pundit while Alan Shearer remained.
Chapman, previously the host of Match of the Day 2, has taken over the flagship Saturday show following Lineker's exit. From this season, Sunday highlights and the new Champions League show will also be branded as Match of the Day.
Lineker, the BBC's highest-paid presenter who had hosted since 1999, left after a social media row involving a post about Zionism that was criticised as antisemitic. He apologised but said it was best for all to step away entirely, though he had planned to front FA Cup and World Cup coverage.
Rooney, 39, joins the punditry team after his managerial stint at Plymouth ended in December. Cates hosted Wednesday's season preview with Rooney, Danny Murphy and Julien Laurens, while Logan is set to present Sunday's programme.
