The goal came just three minutes after Kevin had equalised for the visitors, silencing the home crowd before the dramatic finale.
Matheus Cunha had put United ahead with a stunning strike from outside the area after Casemiro’s no-look pass, celebrating with a surfing gesture. Casemiro had earlier opened the scoring with a header from a free-kick, awarded after a contentious VAR review overturned a penalty decision but spotted a foul by Jorge Cuenca.
Interim manager Michael Carrick hailed the win as a special moment. “It’s the best feeling,” he said. “Some of the best moments I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of come when you get a moment of elation like that. There’s no better place, in front of the Stretford End, and it ends up meaning a bit more.”
