Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has urged interim manager Michael Carrick to sell both Harry Maguire and Mason Mount this summer, warning that keeping them would be a 'foolhardy' mistake. Parker believes sentiment should not block the club's progression.
Maguire, 32, has been a key figure since returning from injury in January, starting every game under Carrick. However, with his contract expiring in three months and young centre-backs Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro waiting, Parker argues it is time to move on. 'He's done his time... it'd be foolhardy to keep him on,' Parker told Metro. 'Keeping Maguire is like stopping two young players maturing.'
On Lisandro Martinez, Parker suggested the Argentine could still prove his worth if he returns to fitness and gets a full pre-season. Meanwhile, Mason Mount has managed just one minute of playing time under Carrick, a late substitute appearance against Manchester City in January. The 27-year-old has been plagued by injuries since his £55m move from Chelsea in 2023, scoring only seven goals in 66 appearances, with just 29 starts.
Parker questioned where Mount fits in the current setup. 'If someone comes in and offers you money, you've got to take it,' he said. 'He hasn't played a lot of football and then he's gone missing again.'
United face a crucial summer rebuild, with decisions to be made on several first-team players as Carrick looks to shape his squad for next season.
