Man Utd's Next Moves: £70m Star and Left-Back Fix After Midfield Revamp
Man Utd's Next Moves: £70m Star and Left-Back Fix

Manchester United are acutely aware that their hard-earned progress this season will count for nothing if they fail to secure the right players in the summer transfer window. By clinching Champions League football for next term, Michael Carrick has achieved what was widely deemed improbable for much of the campaign under his predecessor, Ruben Amorim.

Carrick's Role in Summer Transfers

While it remains uncertain whether interim head coach Carrick will lead the side next season, he is believed to be advising the United hierarchy on potential summer signings. The prospect of Champions League football is likely to prove a significant advantage for director of football Jason Wilcox in attracting top talent, a stark contrast to last season when the Reds missed out on Europe entirely and finished 15th in the league.

Last summer, Wilcox prioritised the forward line, bringing in Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha for combined fees exceeding £200 million. This time, the midfield represents the most pressing concern, having been a glaring weakness throughout the entire season. That issue is set to intensify given Casemiro's imminent departure and the growing likelihood that Manuel Ugarte will also exit Old Trafford.

Midfield Overhaul Needed

This leaves Carrick, or whoever takes charge next term, without a holding midfielder. Further forward, options are equally thin, with Kobbie Mainoo and injury-prone Mason Mount being the only recognised No. 8s at the club's disposal. Consequently, a substantial spending spree is anticipated on two, or potentially three, midfield additions. According to recent reports, combative Atalanta midfielder Ederson is among the most probable new arrivals this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United are in discussions with the 26-year-old Brazilian's agent regarding personal terms. Ederson has featured on United's shortlist since last year and can be secured for a highly reasonable fee of around £40 million, bringing much-needed reinforcement to the engine room. However, if Ederson represents the floor-raiser, United also require a midfielder capable of raising the ceiling.

Marquee Signing Targets

Reports indicate Old Trafford chiefs are keen to land one marquee signing who could command a fee of up to £80 million. Elliot Anderson remains their top target, though they may need to look elsewhere should Nottingham Forest demand a Premier League record-breaking transfer, surpassing Florian Wirtz's £116 million move to Liverpool. Given Manchester City's interest, United would be wise to avoid a bidding war and any deal costing upwards of £100 million for the England international.

In that scenario, Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, whom United have also been monitoring, represents a financially astute alternative. The 22-year-old, expected to feature for the Three Lions at this summer's World Cup, could command a fee of £70-80 million but would bring much-needed quality to the squad. Wharton is perhaps the closest current Premier League player to Carrick in his prime, with the ability to dictate play from deep.

United are also known to have their eye on Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, valued at around £50 million. The 22-year-old is a serious midfield contender in Wilcox's thinking, despite being a less high-profile name than Carlos Baleba or Sandro Tonali. Securing Ederson and Wharton would make Scott's arrival dependent on how much revenue United can generate through player sales, with other areas of the squad also requiring urgent reinforcement.

Defensive and Full-Back Reinforcements

Central defence is one such area, given Harry Maguire's age and the injury-prone records of Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are two top-class defenders who could push for an exit following Tottenham's dreadful campaign. However, Nottingham Forest's Murillo is the player United ought to target instead. The tenacious Brazilian is one of Forest's most vital assets and could carry a substantial price tag of £60-70 million. At this stage, with United's squad stretched across Europe, the League Cup, and the FA Cup next season, it is a sum they cannot afford to shy away from.

Completing what promises to be a hectic summer will be the pursuit of a left-back. The heavy dependence on Luke Shaw is simply not sustainable going forward, while Patrick Dorgu has proved his worth further up the pitch under Carrick. Bournemouth's Adrien Truffert is among the names linked with a move to Old Trafford. Truffert has reportedly attracted the attention of the scouting team, having made a strong impression on the south coast since joining last summer. The Frenchman has featured for the full duration of all but two Premier League matches for the Cherries this season, underlining his consistency.
