Manchester United Star Senne Lammens Reveals Unusual Path to Success
In a surprising revelation, Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens has disclosed that his secret to thriving under interim manager Michael Carrick involves reading books about sporting icons rather than watching football. The Belgian shot-stopper, who joined United from Royal Antwerp in an £18 million deal last September, has quickly become a pivotal figure in the club's recent resurgence.
Inspiration from Sporting Legends
Lammens, speaking at a Manchester school event ahead of World Book Day on behalf of the Manchester United Foundation, explained his unconventional approach. "I don't really watch a lot of football," he admitted. "Everything has revolved around football at the club, so you almost want to switch off a little bit mentally." Instead, he immerses himself in biographies of athletes like Tiger Woods and LeBron James, seeking insights into their mentality and preparation.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper emphasised that this method helps him gain diverse perspectives. "I'm a big sports guy. I love watching other sports and other athletes do their thing, especially how they prepare and think about their game," Lammens said. He highlighted examples from the NBA, such as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, noting that their stories offer valuable lessons on handling adversity and stress.
Rapid Rise at Old Trafford
Since his arrival, Lammens has established himself as United's first-choice goalkeeper, playing a key role in the team's improved performances. His adaptation to the Premier League has been seamless, with fans and pundits alike praising his composure and shot-stopping abilities. Lammens attributes part of this success to his reading habits, which he believes foster mental resilience.
"When I have a really good book I read quite a lot," he shared, mentioning he is currently engrossed in Tiger Woods' biography. "It's reading about other athletes for example, about mentality and there are lots of good books about dealing with adversity, dealing with stress or stuff like that which can also help you I think in this kind of industry and work."
Embracing Pressure and Team Spirit
Adjusting to the spotlight at a club like Manchester United was initially challenging for Lammens, but he has learned to embrace the pressure. "For me personally I don't really try to think about it too much," he stated. "Pressure is a bit what you make it, what you think and stuff. I try to just relax. It's not too bad for me to be honest."
He also praised the positive atmosphere under Michael Carrick, highlighting the team's camaraderie. "The camaraderie in the dressing room is pretty on point, and quite a nice place to be at the moment. The togetherness is really there," Lammens added. This unity has been instrumental in United's recent winning streak, which Lammens described as "really really good."
Lammens' unique approach to professional development, blending sports psychology with practical experience, underscores a growing trend among athletes seeking holistic growth. As Manchester United continues its revival, his story serves as an inspiring example of how unconventional methods can lead to remarkable success on the pitch.
