Manchester United have reportedly narrowed their search for an interim manager to just two former players, with club icon Ruud van Nistelrooy now out of contention.
The Two-Horse Race for Old Trafford
Following discussions on Tuesday, the battle to take temporary charge at Manchester United until the season's end is now between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox held talks with both candidates and are set for further meetings before making a final decision.
Carrick is understood to be receiving serious consideration for the role. However, Solskjaer emerged as the apparent frontrunner after he was spotted in Cheshire on Tuesday, fuelling speculation of an imminent return.
Proven Interim Pedigrees
Both men have significant history stepping into the breach at Old Trafford. Solskjaer famously took over in December 2018 following the sacking of Jose Mourinho, winning his first eight matches in charge. His successful interim spell led to a permanent three-year contract, though his tenure ultimately ended in November 2021.
Carrick then briefly took the reins for three matches before Ralf Rangnick was appointed for the rest of that campaign. Carrick later left his coaching role and embarked on a managerial career with Middlesbrough, lasting two-and-a-half seasons before departing last summer.
Why Van Nistelrooy is Out of the Frame
The legendary Dutch striker, who returned to United as an assistant to Erik ten Hag in 2024, has been ruled out of the running for the interim position this time. Van Nistelrooy did take charge for three matches following Ten Hag's departure last year, prior to Ruben Amorim's arrival.
His most recent role at Leicester City ended by mutual consent after their Premier League relegation. According to reports, he will not be considered for the temporary job on this occasion.
Solskjaer brings the most recent and extensive managerial experience of the candidates. He managed Besiktas until earlier this season and has over 200 matches under his belt from spells at Molde and Cardiff City.
Current caretaker Darren Fletcher will lead the team for Wednesday's trip to Burnley and potentially this weekend's FA Cup tie against Brighton. The new interim boss, whether Carrick or Solskjaer, looks set for a baptism of fire with their first match likely to be the Manchester derby against City, followed by a daunting trip to league leaders Arsenal at the month's end.
