Manchester United are weighing up whether to match Bologna's €25million (£21.7m) asking price for Jhon Lucumi after complications in their pursuit of Lewis Hall. The Colombian defender is attracting interest from across Europe, with United firmly in the mix.
Transfer race heats up
Sunderland failed to land him last summer, while Chelsea, Juventus and Inter have since joined the chase. Lucumi is only willing to leave Bologna for a 'big club,' which puts United in a strong position. According to Corriere di Bologna, both United and Chelsea are considering paying the fee, and Chelsea's sale of Trevoh Chalobah to Como has freed up funds for them to make a move.
Juventus have reportedly agreed personal terms with the player, but their offer falls short of Bologna's demands, opening the door for a Premier League switch. Bologna are optimistic that English clubs could spark a bidding war, with Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest also showing interest.
Hall stays at Newcastle
Only United and Chelsea are described as 'capable' of meeting Bologna's €25m (£21.7m) valuation, however. This follows Newcastle informing United that Hall is not for sale this summer, after an initial inquiry was rejected, according to Sky Sports. Newcastle are also looking to sign another full-back, indicating they cannot afford to lose one.
Earlier reports suggested United were prepared to pay £60m for Hall. With Hall off the table, United are exploring other options. Manager Michael Carrick is keen to strengthen at left-back. Patrick Dorgu is expected to play further forward, while young Harry Amass has been told he can leave. This leaves Luke Shaw as the only experienced option in that position.
Other targets
Hall had emerged as a prime target after impressing in the Premier League for Newcastle and narrowly missing out on a place in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the World Cup. Hall has also reportedly turned down a return to Chelsea, with staying at St James' Park now looking the most likely outcome.
Newcastle have had a turbulent summer, with Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and manager Eddie Howe all leaving. Bruno Guimaraes' move to Arsenal is also on the cards. United do have other targets in mind, including Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson, who is seen as a 'more affordable alternative.'
