Manchester United and Ipswich Town will be without nine players between them for their Premier League showdown at Old Trafford. Michael Carrick's side are desperate to recover from their shocking start to the new campaign, having suffered a 2-0 defeat to Hull City, who were favourites to be relegated before the match.
United have since completed the capture of Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion for £70million, but he is set to be one of the major absentees. Meanwhile, Ipswich kicked off their campaign with a victory over Sunderland, despite being written off as heavy underdogs.
United's injury list
Carrick confirmed Amad Diallo will play no part in the visit of the Tractor Boys as he continues his recovery from a minor injury picked up in training. When pressed for an update on the Ivorian, who was also absent for the Hull defeat, Carrick said: "Amad won't be involved, he'll be out for a little bit longer."
Mason Mount will likewise remain on the sidelines for the clash against the East Anglians. Carrick did offer encouragement over his fitness, saying: "Mase is back around the group, he trained this week, so a real positive."
Despite his arrival, the United boss also confirmed that Baleba is unlikely to be fit enough to feature against Ipswich. The Reds manager said: "He's got a little ankle issue, so maybe a couple of weeks or so, three weeks. We knew that before. It's no major issue. It'll be great to have him back."
Long-term absentees
Long-term injury absentee Matthijs De Ligt remains sidelined, but is edging ever closer to full fitness. Carrick offered an update on the Dutchman, saying: "Matta's obviously been out for a long period of time. But he's training and it's great to have him back. He won't be involved, but he's in good shape and moving in a good direction, so that's a good bonus for us really, at this stage, to have him back."
While he would not have been in contention to start, backup goalkeeper Tom Heaton will also miss the fixture after sustaining an injury during the pre-season friendly against PSG. Carrick is yet to put a timeframe on the shot-stopper's return.
Ipswich's absentees
Ipswich are without four players. Jaden Philogene is side-lined with an ankle problem and was absent for the win over Sunderland. Florentino Luis is ruled out with a calf injury, having also missed the clash against the Black Cats. Azor Matusiwa, another player absent last week, will sit out once more with a thigh complaint. Jack Taylor remains on the treatment table with a knee injury, having also been unable to play in the Premier League opener.
