Manchester United's Champions League match against Como is at risk of postponement after heavy rainfall struck the Italian region, with an orange weather warning issued for Lombardy. The warning signals severe and dangerous conditions, prompting calls for vigilance.
The rain arrived on Tuesday and continued into Wednesday morning, leaving the pitch at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia waterlogged and conditions treacherous. According to PA, 64mm of rain is forecast before kick-off, and with only one of the stadium's four stands under cover, fans are bracing for a wet evening.
Pitch Concerns and Confidence
Despite the added threat of lightning, Como remains confident the pitch will hold up and the match will avoid postponement. United, who have won and lost in their opening two Champions League fixtures, have traveled to Italy for their third group-stage game of the season.
Manager Michael Carrick dismissed concerns about the weather ahead of the match. "No, nothing immediate from me, we're used to the rain," he said. "We'll make the most of it!"
Team News and Context
United have won only two games all season and face a Como side led by former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas, who are on an upward trajectory and include ex-United player Willy Kambwala in their squad.
Carrick's side trained on Tuesday without six players, which could significantly impact selection. Ayden Heaven, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu were all absent.
Manager's Position
Despite presiding over the club's worst start to a campaign in 40 years, Carrick said he feels supported by those above him. "I don't need any reassurance. It's pretty clear. I know the role, I know my responsibilities, I don't need anyone to tell me when it's going well or when it needs to be better," he said.
"I know the realities and have no problem with that. I know we got to win football games for everything to flow and fit into place. I feel backed, yeah, why wouldn't I? I have a really good relationship with everyone at the football club. There are no issues on that side."
