Manchester United have been told to complete three more transfers before the transfer window closes, following their 2-0 defeat to Hull City on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
Michael Carrick's side were beaten by the newly promoted team, and former United right-back Gary Neville has now urged his old club to strengthen in three departments.
Neville calls for defensive additions
Speaking on his podcast, Neville said the defeat highlighted that United's defence is not good enough. He believes the club needs a centre-back, a right-back and a left-back.
“What it did highlight is that Man United defence isn’t good enough. To be fair the club probably know that, they rebuilt the forward line last summer and rebuilt the midfield this summer with a few signings,” he said.
“I don’t know if they’ve got the money or not but they do need a centre-back, and they do need full-backs. They just do. There’s no other way of putting it really. That was highlighted yesterday.”
Left-back options emerge
United have just over a week left to complete their business, with the £70million signing of Carlos Baleba expected to go through this week.
The club's pursuit of Lewis Hall appears to be fading, with Newcastle reportedly demanding a world record fee for a left-back. The expectation is that the price could rise above £60m and even reach £70m.
Alternatives at left-back include Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly, who was reportedly offered to United earlier this summer. David Raum of RB Leipzig is also believed to be on United's radar, while Alejandro Balde is said to be available from Barcelona.
Right-back and centre-half targets
Fewer names have been linked to United for the right-back and centre-half positions. Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae has been suggested as a potential option, but reports in Germany suggest he is content in Bavaria.
Julian Ryerson had been considered earlier in the window, with suggestions that talks had opened with Borussia Dortmund. However, that move has slowed down, with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui starting the season as the two right-back options.
