Man Utd takeover: Glazers set conditions and 'annoyed' at INEOS

The Glazers are reportedly prepared to consider selling Manchester United, but only if one of two conditions is met. The unpopular United owners are also said to be increasingly 'annoyed' by INEOS' decision-making both on and off the field.

United's sackings of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim are believed to have cost approximately £25m, while reports suggest the Glazers were displeased by the way the club eliminated 500 positions. Joel Glazer has been named as someone who was reportedly angered by the number of employees Sir Jim Ratcliffe and colleagues made redundant.

Two Scenarios for a Sale

However, there appears to be no indication the Glazers intend to offload the club imminently, owing to a lack of market appetite. Two scenarios have since emerged that would tempt them into allowing a takeover.

According to ESPN, the Glazers could opt to sell United upon completion of the new Old Trafford, or if Manchester City is removed from the Premier League. The latter remains possible after City were found guilty of financial-related charges brought against them by the Premier League.

The spectrum of sanctions which might be imposed upon City is extensive. A relegation-ensuring points deduction, sufficiently severe to confine them to the Championship for more than one season, remains possible. However, the timing of such punishment remains uncertain, especially following the club's appeal against the verdict.

Financial Impact and Frustration

Nonetheless, both scenarios would considerably elevate United's financial valuation. A new stadium would boost the price at which the Glazers could offload the club, while the prospect of acquiring a side that no longer faces a local rival like Manchester City in its proximity would equally enhance United's appeal to prospective purchasers.

On the whole, the Glazers have thus far been disappointed by the club's trajectory ever since they chose to hand over day-to-day control of football operations to minority shareholder Ratcliffe and his INEOS operation.

A source familiar with the Glazer family told ESPN: "The fans were all singing about the Glazers, but I'm not sure they realise how bad Jim is. He couldn't have masterminded a worse situation. He's downgraded in all departments. It's basically the opposite of what he said his strategy is."

Investment and Managerial Changes

Hundreds of millions have been invested in new recruits, many of whom have struggled to make an impact at the club. One expensive misjudgement was the choice to offer Ten Hag a contract extension in June 2024, only to sack him four months later. Dismissing Amorim also saddled the club with a £16.7m compensation package, subsequently reduced to £8.2m following the Portuguese coach's appointment at AC Milan.

Since Ratcliffe assumed control, United won the FA Cup under Ten Hag and reached the Europa League final under Amorim, yet on-pitch performances have largely fallen short of expectations. Prospects appeared bright when Michael Carrick steered United to third place in the table last season; however, his faltering start to the current campaign has left the club teetering just above the relegation zone.
