Man Utd shift focus to Scalvini over third midfielder

Manchester United have changed their transfer priorities, with Michael Carrick and INEOS now focusing on defensive reinforcements rather than a third midfielder. The club has registered an interest in Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, according to The Telegraph.

Scalvini on United's radar

The 22-year-old Italy international has made 137 appearances for the Serie A club and is rated at £32 million. He would provide much-needed depth to Carrick's defense, especially given the injury problems of Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt last season. Scalvini is also capable of playing as a defensive midfielder.

Carrick has reportedly abandoned plans to sign another midfielder, with the remaining transfer budget potentially being used to secure a defender. This would end any renewed interest in Bournemouth's Alex Scott, who was the subject of a £64 million bid from Chelsea earlier in the window.

Zirkzee could leave

United have not yet strengthened their forward line this summer, beyond the return of Marcus Rashford. However, Carrick is considering allowing Joshua Zirkzee to leave the club. According to Sky Sport Italy, Juventus are keen on a season-long loan for the Dutch forward.

Zirkzee, 25, has struggled to establish himself since his £36.5 million move in 2024, scoring just nine goals in 75 appearances. The report suggests he has agreed to the move, with his playing time limited last season due to the presence of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.
