While United acknowledge the need to strengthen in midfield, their primary targets—Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Brighton's Carlos Baleba—are unavailable for transfer this month, and the hierarchy do not wish to pursue short-term solutions.
On the outgoing front, no significant sales are anticipated. Joshua Zirkzee, linked with a return to Italy, and Kobbie Mainoo, who has seen limited game time, are both expected to remain at Old Trafford. The Red Devils' poor form continued with an FA Cup defeat to Brighton on Sunday, ending their last hope of silverware this season.
Carrick faces a challenging start, with Manchester City visiting Old Trafford this weekend followed by a trip to league leaders Arsenal. However, the club believes that with players returning from injury and forwards Mbeumo and Amad Diallo back from the Africa Cup of Nations, Carrick has sufficient depth and quality to turn the season around.
