Man Utd player ratings vs Hull: Bruno Fernandes goes missing as two 2/10s stink it up
Man Utd player ratings: Fernandes missing, two 2/10s in Hull loss

Manchester United began the Premier League season with a 2-0 defeat at Hull City. Semi Ajayi tapped into an empty net after 17 minutes, and Nobel Mendy headed in Regan Slater's cross before half-time.

First-half collapse

United fell behind when Senne Lammens saved from Oli McBurnie, but the ball fell to Ajayi. Set pieces caused further problems, with Mendy scoring from a whipped Slater delivery.

Hull retreated after the break. Marcus Rashford looked lively after coming on, while Bryan Mbeumo missed a one-on-one chance. United were blunted overall.

Player ratings

Senne Lammens - 7: The best United player on the pitch. Made sharp saves in the first half and was quick off his line to deny a Hull breakaway in the second.

Noussair Mazraoui - 5: A coin flip for the right-back spot with Diogo Dalot. He just wasn't very good.

Harry Maguire - 4: At sixes and sevens for the opener, marking team-mate Andrey Santos instead of Hull attackers. Looked better up front.

Ayden Heaven - 3: The worst culprit for the first goal. His positional awareness was laughable, a shambolic outing.

Luke Shaw - 5: Abysmal in the first half, but linked up better with Rashford after his introduction.

Andrey Santos - 3: Went missing for the opening goal and for most of the match. The warning signs from the AC Milan defeat were clear again.

Youri Tielemans - 2: Everything he touched turned to concrete. His weight of pass suggested steel-toe caps in his boots.

Bruno Fernandes - 4: So often the man to drag United out of the mire, just when their talisman needed him most.

Patrick Dorgu - 2: A performance that forces a club into the transfer market. Dismal on the left wing, looking like Bambi on ice in his 45 minutes.

Matheus Cunha - 4: Went missing as centre-forward but benefitted from a change in position. Played a lovely pass for Mbeumo, whose finish let him down.

Bryan Mbeumo - 5: Grew into the game and looked the most likely attacker. Ghosted in the first half but saved some face in the second.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford - 5: A tenfold improvement on the first-half left side. Attempted to take on his man and looked threatening; rustiness was his biggest issue.

Kobbie Mainoo - 4: Might have felt hard done by not to start. Didn't do much after his introduction.

Benjamin Sesko - 3: The benefit of the doubt because he didn't play in pre-season, but that's the only thing separating him from a 1/10. A waste of space at the top of the pitch.

Diogo Dalot - 5: Added an extra option on the right after Mazraoui offered little.

Shea Lacey - 5: Thrown into the deep end, but didn't do much.
