Man Utd no longer elite as Emery snub shows

Jamie Carragher has argued that Manchester United are no longer an elite club, citing Unai Emery's decision to stay at Aston Villa and United's recent transfer activity as evidence. The Sky Sports pundit's comments come amid a row with Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris, who threatened legal action over what he called "unacceptable insults".

Carragher's claim and the backlash

Carragher had suggested Emery as a potential replacement for Michael Carrick at United, prompting a backlash from Villa fans and a response from the club's chairman. The row has continued, with Emery firmly stating that Villa can challenge for the Champions League.

Writing in his newspaper column, Carragher said it was "beyond doubt" that United eclipse Villa on every conceivable metric. He added: "It did not strike me as controversial to suggest that when a club of United’s size wants Aston Villa’s managers or players, traditionally they get them."

United's changing status

Carragher acknowledged that the financial power, history, and European offers of the Premier League's traditional elite usually tempt targets. However, he argued that his viewpoint is now out of date, as United are no longer the powerhouse of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

This summer, United spent £155million to sign Youri Tielemans from Villa, Andrey Santos from Chelsea, and Carlos Baleba from Brighton. Carragher described these as "middle-shelf players at best", noting that premium players are heading elsewhere. With the Glazers piling up debts and Sir Jim Ratcliffe slashing costs, United are unwilling or unable to compete with rivals in the transfer market.

Managerial struggles

Since Ferguson retired in 2013, United have had 11 permanent or interim bosses. Five, including Carrick, have been former United players. Only Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho could be described as proven, elite managers.

The last two permanent bosses before Carrick were Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, hired after encouraging spells with Ajax and Sporting Lisbon. In 2024, United chiefs spoke with Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate about replacing Ten Hag, but neither wanted the job. The list of prospective replacements for Carrick included Emery and Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler, both unattainable, while Eddie Howe was seen as a realistic option.

Sunday's clash

Emery will take his Villa side to Old Trafford on Sunday, with Villa arriving after a 3-0 defeat to Barcelona and United buoyed by a 3-2 comeback win over Roma. Carragher suggested that nobody would be surprised to see Villa leave with all three points, as Emery remains happy at Villa with good reason.
