Manchester United have been forced to look elsewhere in their search for a left-back this summer after Newcastle made it clear that Lewis Hall is not for sale. With 24 days left in the transfer window, United must pivot to other targets.
Newcastle's stance blocks Hall move
Newcastle have informed United that after selling Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, they are unwilling to part with Hall as well. A bid beyond United's means would be required to test that resolve, making a deal unlikely.
Michael Carrick is keen to add competition at left-back, where Luke Shaw remains first choice. Harry Amass has featured in pre-season but could be sold or loaned out, while Noussair Mazraoui and Diego Dalot are more comfortable on the right, and Patrick Dorgu has impressed further forward.
Four alternatives for United
Antonee Robinson
Robinson's form dipped last season, but his 2024-25 campaign, with 10 assists in the Premier League, remains memorable. The 28-year-old, who played for the United States at the World Cup, offers pace and attacking intent, unlike the more conservative Shaw. With two years left on his Fulham contract, he could be affordable.
El Hadji Malick Diouf
Diouf was relegated with West Ham last season but contributed five assists in 32 Premier League matches. The 21-year-old Senegal international has four years left on his contract, and West Ham have already rejected a bid from Brentford. Having sold Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville for big fees, they are under little pressure to sell.
Jorge Salinas
The 19-year-old Racing Santander player is reportedly on United's radar. He has a €16m (£13.7m) release clause, making him affordable, but Barcelona are also interested as they seek a replacement for Joao Cancelo, who is set to join Al-Hilal.
David Raum
The RB Leipzig captain is an energetic and experienced option who could displace Shaw. He is more mobile than Shaw, who is entering his 13th season at United. Raum's crossing could benefit Benjamin Sesko, his former Leipzig teammate. Leipzig have no need to sell after receiving £120m for Yan Diomande, but Raum has less than a year left on his contract and has yet to hold extension talks.
Raum said: "It's up to the club to decide when they approach me, what they offer, how much appreciation they show, what their plans are for me, and where they want to go in the coming years."
He added: "Of course, I have to listen to that and make my own decision. I'm 28 now, and naturally I also have dreams and goals. You always have to see how that fits together with the club's plans, ideas and objectives for the next few years."
