Manchester United have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Italy defender Giorgio Scalvini, according to reports.
United's transfer plans
Michael Carrick is seeking to rebuild his squad as he prepares for his first full season in charge of the Red Devils. United have made it a priority to bolster their midfield options after the departure of Casemiro, with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arriving from Chelsea and Aston Villa, respectively. Karl Darlow has also arrived from Leeds United to serve as a back-up to Senne Lammens following his impressive debut season at Old Trafford.
United are still keen to make further additions, particularly in midfield, with Manu Kone and Carlos Baleba among the names under consideration. The Red Devils have also explored adding more defensive depth, specifically at left-back, to provide competition for Luke Shaw, who started all 38 league games last season.
Scalvini interest
Lewis Hall is a name who has been linked with United, with the Newcastle United full-back reportedly 'keen' on a move to Old Trafford. The Telegraph reports that versatile Italian defender Scalvini is another name under consideration by the United hierarchy.
The Red Devils have already scouted the 22-year-old, who has made over 100 appearances for boyhood club Atalanta and helped them win the Europa League in 2024. Scalvini, who can play in a back three and back four as well as in defensive midfield, is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League.
Competition and price
But United could face competition to complete a deal for Scalvini, with reports elsewhere suggesting that both Chelsea and Tottenham are interested in the Italian. Atalanta are aware of the interest in their player and reportedly want at least £42m to sign the defender, who is under contract until the summer of 2028.
Elsewhere, United have also explored a deal for Myles Lewis-Skelly, who would provide cover for the Red Devils at left-back and central midfielder. The Arsenal academy graduate struggled for minutes for large swathes of last season before an impressive run at the end of the season, which culminated in him starting the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. However, with the Gunners close to signing Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis-Skelly could once again find himself in a battle for regular starts. Despite that, it is said that Arsenal would prefer to keep the 19-year-old at the club heading into next season.
