Manchester United are facing a significant twist in the future of teenage talent JJ Gabriel, with German publication Bild reporting that Gabriel "will definitely leave United" and depart by next summer at the very latest. The development comes during the international break, with Michael Carrick's side sitting 12th in the Premier League table after three matches without victory.
Gabriel set for European exit
According to Bild, Gabriel is almost certain to exit the Premier League, with Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain all lining up for his services. The teenager previously spent periods with Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham before joining United in 2022, but appears destined for life on the continent.
The development will be a disappointment to many United supporters who had hoped to see Gabriel emerge as the team's figurehead. His prospects of securing a transfer to one of Europe's elite clubs are enhanced by the likelihood he'll face no difficulties obtaining an EU passport. Any non-EU citizen would be barred from turning out for the senior side of a club such as Barcelona or Bayern until reaching their 18th birthday.
Family heritage eases move
Gabriel's route should be eased by his mother's Cypriot heritage, while his father, Joe, represented the Republic of Ireland. Bild's report also indicates he and his representatives are currently leaning towards a switch to Spain.
The absence of genuine title ambitions at United in the short term is reportedly a significant consideration in Gabriel's thinking. Having already seen a request to be de-registered at United rejected, it seems merely a question of time before the club's most precious talent moves on.
Rooney questions Sesko resolve
Wayne Rooney has cast doubt over Benjamin Sesko's commitment following his latest injury setbacks. The forward recently withdrew from Slovenia's international squad, having sat out Sunday's 1-1 draw against Fulham with a shin complaint. It's the identical problem that's been hampering the 6'5" striker since the end of last season, when he fell awkwardly at the side of the pitch.
United legends Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt both raised concerns about the setback on The Good, The Bad and The Football. Butt commented: "you either break your shin, or you play."
Rooney has taken his turn in wondering whether Sesko has the right resolve to play for his former club. "Shin? Has he broken it? You can hurt your shin, you can take tackles... I bet he's wearing them little stupid shinpads as well," he said on the Stick to United podcast.
"If you're trying to play No. 9 [for United] and you've got a must-win game and you've got a sore shin and you're not playing...that's a big part of the problem. Unless you physically can't play, you play when you're injured. I remember before games we used to get injections and the doctor used to put them in your a**e."
