Liverpool reportedly consider their incoming £60 million signing Jeremy Jacquet a more valuable long-term acquisition than Marc Guehi, whom they nearly signed last summer. The Reds had agreed a £35 million deal for Guehi in September, but Crystal Palace pulled out after failing to find a replacement.
Guehi, 25, eventually joined Manchester City in January for around £20 million. Liverpool have now agreed to sign Jacquet, 20, from Rennes for £55 million plus £5 million in add-ons, with the move set to be completed in the summer.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool view Jacquet as fitting their model of building a team for the next generation. The club has signed eight first-team players aged 25 and under in the last 18 months, including Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz and Giovanni Leoni.
Jacquet arrived on Merseyside on Monday to finalise the transfer, having chosen Liverpool over Chelsea and Bayern Munich. He will remain at Rennes until the summer as the French club do not want to lose him mid-season.
Meanwhile, Guehi has made two appearances for City since his move, earning praise from manager Pep Guardiola. Guardiola said: 'Really good. With Marc, you see, the captain of Crystal Palace has to be something special.'
