Kobbie Mainoo could face a shortage of potential destinations should he decide to leave Manchester United this summer, according to reports. The academy graduate has been an unused substitute in the club's opening two Premier League matches under Ruben Amorim, with the Portuguese coach preferring Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in midfield.
Mainoo, who broke through under Erik ten Hag in the 2023-24 season, has been linked with an exit as he approaches the final two years of his contract. With the World Cup next year, the England international is reportedly keen to secure regular first-team football to strengthen his case for Thomas Tuchel's squad, having started the Euro 2024 final against Spain.
However, The Athletic reports that there has been no concrete interest from other clubs, and with the summer transfer deadline less than a week away, Mainoo's options appear limited. Amorim explained the midfielder's absence from the starting lineup after the 1-1 draw with Fulham, saying that Fernandes is currently ahead of him in the pecking order.
“He’s fighting for the position now with Bruno and I change two midfielders,” Amorim said. “I let Mason Mount play there because we want to score a goal and when I changed I felt the team need to return to one holding midfielder near Bruno. So he (Mainoo) just needs to fight for the position with Bruno, as it should be at Manchester United.”
Mainoo has been urged to compete for his place at Old Trafford, but speculation over his future persists as the transfer window enters its final days.
