Manchester United have been issued a warning about Benjamin Sesko's long-term prospects to lead the forward line for the club. Sesko's future at United has been the subject of speculation this summer, despite only moving to Old Trafford 12 months ago.
Sesko's debut season at Old Trafford
Sesko signed for United from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to £74million, and the Slovenia international went on to score 12 goals during his debut season for the Reds. The 23-year-old was given an extended run in the team after Michael Carrick's arrival back in January, but missed the final four matches of the campaign with a shin injury.
Bayern Munich rumours and Owen's doubts
Sesko's future has been a topic of debate over the summer, with reports in recent days claiming that Bayern Munich are weighing up making a move for the United striker. Sesko is reportedly viewed by Bayern as a potential long-term successor to Harry Kane.
Former United striker Michael Owen has "doubts" that Sesko could be a long-term option for United, and pondered the idea of the Reds going into the market for a new centre forward.
"Well, a lot of the time, half the time he [Sesko] doesn't even play and they do quite well anyway," Owen said in an interview with Goal. "Whether they push [Matheus] Cunha up front or [Bryan] Mbeumo or whoever, they've managed without him.
"Even though he's the only out and out centre forward, if it was the European Cup final next week, then I'm not sure he would start. If they had another option, a better option, I'm sure they would take that."
Owen acknowledges Sesko's growth
However, he has surprised a few. He wasn't that convincing right at the start, but it's not easy to be convincing in the Manchester United team over the last decade or so. "Obviously, in the second half of the season, Manchester United are playing really, really well. He's grown into the role as well.
"You'd definitely say he's going to get more game time this season and see how he does. Do I see him as the long-term Manchester United centre forward? I'd have my doubts."
