Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has told the club to replace goalkeeper Senne Lammens with Spain's Unai Simon, saying the Belgian is not of the calibre needed to challenge for major trophies.
Lammens criticised after World Cup error
Lammens was one of United's stand-out performers last season, helping them secure a return to the Champions League. However, he had a difficult World Cup, with his error gifting Spain a 2-1 win and a place in the semi-finals.
Meulensteen, who was Sir Alex Ferguson's No.2 at Old Trafford, said: "There's been a bit of a debate about whether Lammens should be the number one going forward, and I personally would be looking for another goalkeeper."
Meulensteen names Simon as ideal target
Speaking to Tipman Tips, Meulensteen compared Lammens' mistake to ones David De Gea used to make, and pointed to Emi Martinez's role in Aston Villa's Europa League win as an example of the level required.
"He's exactly who Manchester United should be going for, and he's playing in Bilbao at the moment. Why wouldn't he want to come to United?" Meulensteen said of Simon, who starts for Spain ahead of Arsenal's David Raya.
"The fact he gets the nod for Spain ahead of David Raya should tell you everything you need to know," he added.
