Michael Carrick is on the verge of being confirmed as Manchester United's permanent head coach after the club offered him a two-year contract, with an option for a further 12 months. The agreement could be finalised before Sunday's lunchtime fixture against Nottingham Forest, bringing clarity ahead of a busy summer.
United were sixth when Ruben Amorim was dismissed, but performances have improved significantly under Carrick's interim charge. The team now sits third in the Premier League, six points above Liverpool with two games remaining, and has secured a return to the Champions League. Carrick has overseen ten wins in 15 league matches since taking over.
Speaking on Friday, Carrick indicated that his future would be resolved "pretty soon" and that "the situation is pretty clear for us all." He expressed pride in returning to the club as both a supporter and former player, adding: "To make a big step, and back in the Champions League is good, we're happy with the work we've done so far."
Regardless of whether the contract is signed, Carrick is set to address supporters after Sunday's match. He emphasised the importance of the fans, saying: "The supporters are a massive part of this club. We thank them for the season and the support, the last four months for me personally."
Midfielder Casemiro has recovered from the injury that kept him out of the Sunderland match, allowing him a potential farewell appearance at Old Trafford. Carrick praised the Brazilian, noting his ups and downs but saying he has been "fantastic" since Carrick's arrival. Meanwhile, defender Matthijs de Ligt has undergone back surgery for a problem that has sidelined him since November, with the Dutchman expected to return early next season.
