Manchester United have decided not to sack Michael Carrick following their defeat by Chelsea. The Red Devils were beaten 2-0 by the Blues at Stamford Bridge, extending their winless run to nine matches in all competitions.
Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scored the goals, while Lisandro Martinez was sent off for two bookable offences in west London, piling further pressure on the under-fire United head coach. Despite the result, it now appears Carrick will remain in post for the club's next two matches, up to the November international break.
Crisis talks lead to stay of execution
According to reports from The Athletic, United's 'crisis talks' held last week following heavy defeats by Como and Bournemouth resulted in an agreement to keep Carrick in his job until the international break, when another assessment would be made. This means Carrick avoided what had seemed like an inevitable sacking after the 3-0 thrashing against Bournemouth at Old Trafford, where the former midfielder appeared to be waving goodbye to the home supporters.
United fans who travelled to west London vented their frustrations towards the club's hierarchy and the out-of-form players, but they sang Carrick's name and applauded their under-pressure manager as he went over to them at the full-time whistle.
Carrick to lead team into upcoming fixtures
Carrick insisted he would remain in charge in a short-worded TV interview with TNT Sports after the match. He will lead his team into their next couple of games against Roma in the Champions League, followed by a home clash against Aston Villa next weekend.
