Manchester United are still active in the summer transfer market with less than a month remaining, as head coach Michael Carrick looks to finalise his squad. After bringing in midfielders Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, the focus has reportedly shifted to defence.
Scalvini interest
According to The Telegraph, United retain an interest in Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini. The 22-year-old has made 137 appearances for the Serie A side and could provide cover given the fitness issues of Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt last season.
The Italy international has been watched by the club before and can also play as a defensive midfielder. He completed 88% of his passes last term. The Telegraph adds that Carrick is no longer prioritising a third midfielder, with funds potentially redirected to defence.
Transfermarkt values Scalvini at £32m (€38m). However, his injury record is a concern: he has missed 81 matches over three years, including 14 last season, due to four separate fitness complaints.
Zirkzee exit possible
United have not strengthened their attack this summer beyond Marcus Rashford's return, yet Carrick may allow Joshua Zirkzee to leave. Sky Sport Italia reports Juventus want the Dutch striker on a season-long loan.
Zirkzee, 25, has scored nine goals in 75 appearances since his £36.5m move in 2024. The report says he has agreed to the move, with playing time limited last season due to Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
