Man United crisis deepens as Carrick stays after Bournemouth defeat
Man United crisis deepens as Carrick stays on

Michael Carrick is staying on as Manchester United manager for now, despite a limp 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday that has reignited the club's annual autumn crisis. The decision, confirmed on Tuesday after a day of deliberation among the club's hierarchy, leaves the former midfielder's long-term future unresolved as fan frustration grows.

Familiar Autumn Turmoil at Old Trafford

This time of year has historically been when United's season unravels. Two years ago, Erik ten Hag lost his job following a defeat to West Ham that left the club 14th in the Premier League with three wins from nine matches, just months after signing a new contract. Twelve months later, his replacement Ruben Amorim faced mounting pressure in November after a 1-0 home loss to Everton, who played nearly 80 minutes with 10 men following Idrissa Gueye's dismissal for striking his own teammate Michael Keane.

Amorim eventually departed after a post-match press conference rant at Elland Road, paving the way for Carrick's interim appointment. A stunning run of results, including five wins from the final six matches of the 2025-26 season, secured Champions League qualification and earned Carrick a two-year contract. At the final home game, he addressed the crowd, thanking the staff and what he called "such a good group of players."

Carrick Backed Despite Bournemouth Rout

Fast forward a few months and Carrick was taking applause again on Sunday, but under drastically different circumstances. The home fans showed support for a boss who is "quite clearly not the biggest problem" at a club that is "once again in a dark place." The ire after the defeat was directed at a squad that has produced woeful performances this season, while senior players Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes have publicly criticised the club, the tactics, Carrick, and Technical Director Jason Wilcox.

It felt inevitable that this week would mark the end for Carrick, but after a day of dithering while Wilcox, Omar Berrada, and presumably Sir Jim Ratcliffe discussed options, news came on Tuesday that he is continuing. For now. The delay in confirming the status quo raises further questions over football decisions at Old Trafford, with parallels drawn to the handling of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's permanent appointment and the Ten Hag contract saga.

Uncertain Future Ahead

Carrick watched United's academy play on Monday and came into training on Tuesday with no external clarity on his position. The club's hierarchy has not indicated whether they are convinced he is the right man, or whether he could still be axed during the November break in three games' time.

What happens next at Old Trafford is anyone's guess. The only certainty seems to be that however it plays out, it will be messy.
