Manchester United lost 2-0 to Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, with the Reds left to rue shocking finishing at Stamford Bridge.
There were encouraging signs from United in the first half, but they could not put one of their chances away. Chelsea opened the scoring in the second half with a Morgan Rogers wonder goal, and Lisandro Martinez was sent off shortly after that. Cole Palmer converted the subsequent penalty to condemn United to their seventh defeat from 13 games this season.
Defensive struggles and a costly red card
Senne Lammens was fortunate to get away with a poor save in the first half, spilling the ball into the path of Estevao. The Belgian couldn't have done much with the two goals he conceded in the second half. He was rated 4.
Leny Yoro struggled at right-back against Bournemouth last weekend, making a big mistake which led to a goal. He looked to have put that mistake behind him, but faded as Chelsea seized control after their first goal. He was rated 4.
Harry Maguire was caught flat-footed on the stroke of half-time and Chelsea almost capitalised, but he had been solid until that. He won the header for the disallowed goal and fought when United went down to 10 men. He was rated 5.
Lisandro Martinez's passing was an asset in the opening exchanges. He combined well with the midfielders to move the ball forward, but made a ridiculous challenge to concede a penalty and was sent off. United had no chance after that. He was rated 2.
Midfield and attack fail to deliver
Diogo Dalot has been given a lot of stick but made a pleasing start to the game by linking up with Cunha down the left. He regressed as the game went on. He was rated 4.
Andrey Santos did not appear fazed by his return to his former club. He came close to scoring when he curled an effort wide but should have done better for Chelsea's first goal. He was rated 4.
Carlos Baleba misplaced his first pass, which would set the tone for most players, but he kept his composure, recovered, and helped United win duels. He couldn't stop Chelsea's first goal from unfolding at the start of the move. He was rated 4.
Bruno Fernandes showed the telltale sign that he is out of form this season: the time he wants on the ball when he receives it. His dithering conceded possession on a few occasions, and he ballooned a huge chance over the bar after an excellent counter-attack. He was rated 3.
Amad looked on it from the first whistle. His aggressive pressing was hugely important to advance United into the final third, but he missed four chances himself in the first half alone. He hasn't scored for 320 days and looks short of confidence in front of goal. He was rated 4.
Bryan Mbeumo seemed to be involved with every passage of play United had in the final third, but he played a role in Rogers' goal at the start of the second half, conceding possession as he tried to hold the ball up on the halfway line. He was rated 4.
Matheus Cunha thought he had broken the deadlock in the first half when he poked home after a header from Maguire at a corner. He fought even after the second goal and wanted to stay on the pitch when his number was up. He was rated 4.
Substitutes' impact
Kobbie Mainoo was fine on his return from injury, rated 5. Mason Mount put himself about, rated 5. Ayden Heaven tried to get stuck in, rated 5. Joshua Zirkzee was hardly involved, rated 5.
