Simon Jordan Insists Manchester City Title Victory Would Bear an Asterisk
TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has declared that any Premier League title triumph for Manchester City this season would arrive with a significant asterisk attached, owing to the club's unresolved 115 charges for alleged financial breaches. The former Crystal Palace owner also suggested that Pep Guardiola's squad could be accused of choking if they falter in the final stages of the campaign.
Title Race Tightens as Charges Loom Large
Manchester City have narrowed the gap to just three points behind leaders Arsenal following a crucial 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland secured the winning goal after Kai Havertz equalised Rayan Cherki's opener for the visitors. Guardiola's side now have an opportunity to overtake Arsenal on Wednesday evening if they defeat Burnley by more than a single goal.
However, Jordan emphasises that City's substantial advantage in the transfer market cannot be overlooked. He criticised the club's January business, which saw them acquire defenders Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo, linking this spending power directly to the cloud of uncertainty hanging over the club due to the pending verdict on their 115 charges.
Unresolved Charges Cast a Decade-Long Shadow
The Premier League champions are awaiting a final decision regarding alleged breaches of league rules, with the hearing having concluded in December 2024 after a twelve-week tribunal. Manchester City have consistently denied any wrongdoing and remain confident of being cleared. The charges relate to a period between 2009 and 2018, during which the club secured three league titles.
Jordan contends that every success achieved by City during this era is overshadowed by these allegations. He pondered whether Guardiola's men might bottle the league title, given that Arsenal have occupied the top spot for the majority of the season.
"If Manchester City go top of the league and then lose two of the remaining five games and Arsenal win all of their games, then I would suggest Man City want to look internally," Jordan stated. "One of the observations we've made is that they have the wherewithal and the squad. So yes, there would be an element of Manchester choked on it."Transfer Market Edge and the Asterisk Debate
The pundit further elaborated on the perceived inequity, highlighting City's ability to strengthen their squad mid-season. "I do think it's absolutely right, and the thing that no one's brought up, I keep bringing it up. It's lovely if you're Manchester City, when you can dip into the transfer market in January and buy the best two players in the division in their positions," Jordan remarked.
He directly addressed the notion of an asterisk accompanying potential silverware, referencing previous comments about Arsenal. "When we talk about asterisks, like that ridiculous observation that Pardew made that Arsenal can win the league with an asterisk. We've still got a bloody, great big asterisk hanging over Man City for the last 10 years, haven't we?" Jordan concluded, underscoring the prolonged nature of the allegations.
The unresolved charges continue to fuel debate around the legitimacy of Manchester City's achievements, adding a layer of controversy to an already tense Premier League title race with Arsenal.
