Manchester City came from behind to defeat Bournemouth 2-1 in their opening Premier League match of the season, thanks to late goals from Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol. The win, secured in dramatic fashion at the Etihad Stadium, saw City overturn a first-half deficit to claim all three points.
Bournemouth Take the Lead
Bournemouth broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when Marcus Tavernier slotted the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma after a swift counter-attack. The visitors had defended resolutely throughout the first half, and City, despite creating several chances, failed to find an equaliser before the break. Erling Haaland was among those to miss opportunities, forcing a save from Djordje Petrovic and seeing a flick go wide.
At half-time, Bournemouth led 1-0, and the home side's defensive lapses were evident. Enzo Maresca's team pushed forward in the second half, with Phil Foden and Nico O'Reilly both having efforts, but Bournemouth continued to hold firm.
Late Drama and City's Comeback
City's persistence finally paid off in the 85th minute when Guehi headed in from a corner, left completely unmarked in the middle of the box. The equaliser set up a tense finale, and in the 91st minute, Gvardiol scored the winner, sliding the ball into the bottom corner after being played onside by a Bournemouth defender. The goal was initially flagged offside, but a VAR check confirmed it stood.
The result moves Manchester City to seventh in the early Premier League table with three points, while Bournemouth remain on zero after their opening defeat. Elsewhere, Brighton thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 to top the standings, and West Brom beat Burnley 3-1 in the Championship.
