Noni Madueke has explained what it is like competing with Bukayo Saka on the right wing for both England and Arsenal, revealing how their styles differ. Madueke and Saka share game time in the right wing position for Arsenal under Mikel Arteta and for England under Thomas Tuchel.
Madueke Starts as Saka Recovers
The ex-Chelsea man started both of England's first two matches of the World Cup as Saka worked his way back to full fitness after an Achilles issue. However, Saka came in for the 2-0 win over Panama and is expected to continue starting in the knockout stages. England face DR Congo in their round of 32 match in Atlanta on Wednesday.
Relationship and Competition
Madueke, 24, described his relationship with Saka and the competition for the same position. “Obviously, it is well-documented that we're very close,” Madueke said. “So normally it should be a little bit strange [to be competing]. But it's not. I feel like it doesn't really affect our relationship whatsoever. I feel like we want the best for each other when each other plays because, at the end of the day, that means that if he plays well, I play well, and England and Arsenal have better chances of winning.”
Different Playing Styles
Madueke then revealed the key difference in their approaches. “In terms of how we differ, I think I thrive in space and he [Saka] thrives in congestion,” Madueke said. Despite the game being a knockout match, DR Congo are expected to set up defensively against England, something the Three Lions found difficult against Ghana and Panama in the group stage.
Breaking Down Defences
“I feel like it is not just us,” Madueke said. “Every team has difficulties with the opposition [sitting back]. It is not easy to break down. I think we've seen other top nations struggle as well.”
