Luke Chambers loan interest grows after Liverpool pre-season

Luke Chambers has emerged as a loan target for several clubs after making a positive impression for Liverpool during pre-season.

Pre-season performances

Chambers started the final two games of the recent tour of the United States against Wrexham and Leeds United, having come off the bench in the opening friendly against Sunderland in Nashville.

While normally a left-back, the 22-year-old was pressed into centre-back duty given Liverpool's lack of availability in the position and scored the opener in the 4-2 loss to Leeds in Chicago.

Loan interest

Chambers spent the second half of last season on loan at Charlton Athletic where he was a regular in helping the Addicks avoid relegation from the Championship.

His performances throughout the calendar year have prompted interest over a temporary move from potential suitors from the Championship including Queens Park Rangers along with at least one club from abroad.

Future decision

A decision over the England under-20 international's immediate future is likely to be made later in the transfer window, with Chambers expected to sign a contract extension at Liverpool before any loan move is confirmed.

His performances in the US earned praise from new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola, most notably a 76-minute runout against Wrexham after which Iraola said: "Luke Chambers played there, he is not a centre-back, but he played really, really well."

Background

Chambers, who has been at Liverpool since the age of six, made his Liverpool debut in the League Cup in September 2023 and went on to make three appearances in the Europa League that season, including two starts.

He had previously had a loan spell in Scotland with Kilmarnock before two temporary stays at League One side Wigan Athletic.
