Former Liverpool midfielder Nuri Sahin has been named the new head coach of Turkish Süper Lig side Istanbul Basaksehir, just months after being sacked by Borussia Dortmund. The 37-year-old has already secured his first victory, leading his new team to a 2-0 away win over Fatih Karagumruk in his debut match.
Sahin's coaching career began in 2021, the same year he retired from playing after a 16-year career that included a loan spell at Liverpool during the 2012/13 season. At Anfield, he made 12 appearances, scoring three goals and providing two assists, before returning to Borussia Dortmund in January 2013.
Speaking about his time at Liverpool, Sahin previously acknowledged that he played out of position under Brendan Rodgers, but insisted he enjoyed his stint at the club. 'The only thing was that I played in a different position than I used to play,' he said. 'But the problem was that Steven Gerrard played in my position! So I had to adjust.'
Istanbul Basaksehir had begun the new Super Lig season without a win in their first three matches, but Sahin's appointment has already turned their fortunes around. His previous role as head coach of Borussia Dortmund ended in January 2025 after a run of poor results, despite guiding the club to the Champions League knockout stages.
