Liverpool have had a £110m bid for Alexander Isak rejected by Newcastle United, with the Merseyside club indicating they will not return with a second offer for the Sweden international during this transfer window. The offer fell short of Newcastle’s £150m valuation, a sum that would set a British transfer record.
Despite long-standing interest from Liverpool and the player’s desire to move to Anfield, the Reds’ first formal bid was submitted after sporting director Richard Hughes made an informal enquiry two weeks ago, where Newcastle suggested a £120m fee. Newcastle swiftly rejected the bid, prompting Liverpool to consider a second attempt futile before the 1 September deadline.
Isak has made clear his wish to explore options this summer, with Liverpool his preferred destination. He did not travel on Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia, with the club citing a minor thigh injury, but he has been training with former club Real Sociedad this week. It remains unclear whether he had permission from Newcastle to do so.
Newcastle have maintained the 25-year-old is not for sale, though they have been actively pursuing other top-level strikers this summer, including Hugo Ekitiké, who joined Liverpool for £79m. Other targets such as Liam Delap, João Pedro and Bryan Mbeumo have eluded them, while bids for Yoane Wissa have been rejected and competition for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko remains stiff.
Liverpool’s offer remains on the table, but with Newcastle’s stance firm and the club’s transfer activity elsewhere, a move for Isak this window appears unlikely. Liverpool have already spent nearly £300m this summer, offset by £190m in sales and strong revenues from their title win and Champions League return.
