Rio Ngumoha has been warned to guard against the perils of early stardom by former England striker Darren Bent. The Liverpool teenager announced himself in August with a stoppage-time winner against Newcastle, becoming the club's youngest-ever goalscorer just days before his 17th birthday.
Bent, who himself carried the weight of youth prodigy expectations during his breakout at Ipswich, urged Ngumoha to surround himself with trustworthy people. Speaking to the ECHO, the 41-year-old said: "He's got to surround himself with good people... people who are going to keep him grounded. Especially nowadays with social media, fans will turn you into a superstar before you become a superstar."
The former Tottenham, Aston Villa, Charlton and Sunderland striker also cautioned against those seeking to exploit the youngster's rise. "You don't need to be making any new friends," Bent added. "They're going to be offering you everything... when they know they've only got their self-interest at heart." Bent is one of only 34 players to have scored 100 or more Premier League goals.
Ngumoha joined Liverpool in 2024 after eight years in Chelsea's academy, a move that infuriated the Blues. Chelsea are still seeking compensation and reportedly banned Liverpool scouts from their youth matches, while John Terry, who mentored Ngumoha, admitted he was "gutted" and likened the youngster to Eden Hazard.
Under Arne Slot, Ngumoha has made five appearances this season and could feature against Chelsea on Saturday. Bent's advice serves as a timely reminder that talent alone is not enough to navigate the demands of elite football.
