Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle in Andoni Iraola's first Premier League match in charge. Dominik Szoboszlai converted a late penalty to secure a point after the Reds had trailed twice.
Match Recap
Newcastle took the lead early through Anthony Elanga on the break. Liverpool struggled in the first half, creating few chances and lacking composure in the final third. After the interval, Cody Gakpo levelled with a long-range strike into the bottom corner.
Parity lasted only three minutes before Joe Willock restored Newcastle's advantage. Liverpool were given a lifeline when Lewis Hall fouled Victor Munoz in the box, and Szoboszlai scored the resulting spot-kick with practically the final touch of the match.
Player Ratings
Alisson Becker - 5: His positioning was not ideal for the early goal, though he had little chance of denying Willock. Made a hash of several crosses he should have claimed comfortably.
Jeremie Frimpong - 4: Failed to make his mark at either end. Wayward deliveries spoiled promising attacks. Booked for fouling Harvey Barnes before half-time.
Jeremy Jacquet - 6: Under pressure defensively at times, but showed encouraging signs in possession with neat distribution.
Virgil van Dijk - 5: Kept things straightforward at the back and appeared confident. Backed away from challenges in the build-up to both goals.
Milos Kerkez - 4: Left trailing by Elanga for the opener and booked for impeding the winger. Offered little in attack and failed to raise his level as the match progressed.
Ryan Gravenberch - 4: Hesitation and poor positioning contributed to Elanga's goal. Should have done better to prevent Wissa in the lead-up to the second strike.
Dominik Szoboszlai - 5: Appeared adrift at times, advanced too far forward for both Newcastle goals, but converted the penalty confidently.
Florian Wirtz - 5: Started brightly but lacked a final product and faded as the game wore on.
Rio Ngumoha - 4: Failed to spark creativity and was largely invisible.
Cody Gakpo - 7: Grafted tirelessly to spearhead the high press and scored a superb leveller from distance.
Alexander Isak - 3: Jeered with virtually every touch. Starved of service but could have grafted harder. An afternoon to forget for the former Newcastle striker.
Substitutes
Alexis Mac Allister - 5: Replaced Wirtz in the second period. Contributed little beyond straightforward distribution.
Victor Munoz - 6: Came on for the final half-hour, earned the penalty, and appeared sharp throughout.
Ronald Araujo - 6: Slotted into defence for the concluding 20 minutes and delivered quality distribution.
Lewis Koumas - 6: Given an opportunity in the dying moments, put in a solid shift and secured a late corner that yielded nothing.
