Liverpool Japan Friendly Cancelled After Earthquake

Liverpool's pre-season friendly against Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan has been cancelled following a powerful earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka peninsula. The 8.8 magnitude quake triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific, including Japan's east coast.

The match was scheduled for Thursday at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, south of Tokyo. Japan's Meteorological Agency warned of waves up to 3 metres, urging 1.9 million residents to evacuate to higher ground from Hokkaido to Wakayama prefecture.

Liverpool owner John W. Henry's wife, Linda Pizzuti, posted on Instagram from Tokyo Bay, describing the water as calm. However, the club decided to cancel the fixture as a precaution. A new lineup had been announced, featuring Giorgi Mamardashvili in goal and new signings Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz.
