Crystal Palace have rejected Liverpool's £35m offer for England defender Marc Guéhi and are demanding a fee of £40m before allowing him to leave. The Liverpool bid was submitted on Saturday and immediately countered by Palace, who want an initial £35m plus £5m in bonuses and a 10% sell-on clause.
Guéhi has less than 12 months left on his contract and has refused to sign an extension, increasing the likelihood of a sale this month. Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted after the Community Shield that the 25-year-old may need to be sold to avoid losing him for free next summer.
Liverpool are understood to be Guéhi's preferred destination, though the Premier League champions only formalised their interest on Saturday. Palace are prepared to let him go if their valuation is met, despite manager Oliver Glasner stating it is now too late to find a replacement before Monday's transfer deadline.
Palace have been seeking defensive reinforcements and have agreed a deal worth up to €27m (£23.4m) for Toulouse's Jaydee Canvot, a France Under-20s defender expected to sign a five-year contract. They have also held talks with Manchester City over Manuel Akanji and inquired about a loan for Monaco's Mohammed Salisu.
Glasner emphasised his desire to keep Guéhi, calling him a crucial part of the defence, but acknowledged that finding a suitable replacement at this stage is almost impossible.
