Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool 4-2 on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley, with substitute Justin Devenny scoring the decisive spot-kick after Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott all missed for the Premier League champions.
Liverpool had taken the lead twice through new signings Hugo Ekitiké and Jeremie Frimpong, but Palace equalised each time — first through a Jean-Philippe Mateta penalty and then via Ismaïla Sarr. The FA Cup winners held their nerve in the shootout to claim the trophy for the first time in their history.
Arne Slot's side, who spent almost £300m this summer, fielded four new recruits including Florian Wirtz, but their defence looked vulnerable against Eberechi Eze and Sarr. Palace captain Marc Guéhi impressed before leaving the field with cramp, later returning to lift the trophy.
The result will not overly concern Slot, as only eight of the last 32 Community Shield winners have gone on to win the Premier League title. Liverpool begin their league campaign against Bournemouth on Friday night.
