The National Hunt racing world is in mourning following the death of the prolific stallion Blue Bresil at the age of 20. The news was confirmed by Glenview Stud in County Cork, Ireland, where the sire had been based since 2020.
A Prolific Sire of Champions
Blue Bresil had risen to become one of the most influential jumps stallions of his generation. His legacy is cemented by an impressive tally of 132 individual winners over jumps since 2013. His most famous offspring is undoubtedly the superstar Constitution Hill, who under trainer Nicky Henderson secured the Champion Hurdle at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival as part of an unbeaten sequence of eight Grade 1 victories.
However, his success was far from a one-horse story. His progeny includes a host of other top-level performers, such as:
- Royale Pagaille – a dual winner of the prestigious Betfair Chase.
- Blue Lord – a top-class chaser.
- Mick Jazz, Inthepocket, Good Land, and Redemption Day – all significant winners in their own right.
In High Demand Until the End
Such was his reputation for siring quality, Blue Bresil attracted books of mares from the sport's elite. In recent seasons, he covered celebrated racemares including Honeysuckle (two-time Champion Hurdle winner), Apples Jade (11-time Grade 1 winner), and Champion Chase heroine Put The Kettle On.
His first Irish-conceived crop, now four-year-olds, is already making a major impact this season. Notable names from this group include Coutach, Samba Train, Blue Waters, Laguna Beach, Minella Marathon, and the juvenile hurdle winner Aqua Blue.
A Lasting Legacy in National Hunt
In a statement released on Wednesday via social media, Glenview Stud expressed its deep sadness. "We would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported him throughout his career," the statement read, paying special tribute to the stud staff for their "exceptional care and dedication".
The stud also thanked Yorton Farm, which managed his earlier career in the UK. The statement concluded by affirming that while Blue Bresil "will be greatly missed... his legacy will live on through his progeny. He leaves his stamp as one of the leading National Hunt stallions of his time."
Based at Glenview Stud in County Cork since 2020, Blue Bresil's remarkable ascent through the stallion ranks has left an indelible mark on jump racing, with his influence set to be felt for many seasons to come through his talented sons and daughters.
