Romeo Lavia produced an outstanding midfield performance as Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, easing the pressure on manager Xabi Alonso after two successive defeats.
The Belgian, starting in place of the ill Jordan Henderson, was the standout player for the home side, whose fans had shown early nervousness following losses to Tottenham and Liverpool.
Turning Point
The tension in the stands only lifted when Lavia made a key tackle in midfield and then won the resulting loose ball, passing to Morgan Rogers. Rogers then ran through the United defence to score the opening goal.
United went a man down shortly after when Lisandro Martinez fouled Wesley Fofana. Cole Palmer converted the resulting penalty to make it 2-0 and secure the three points.
Lavia's Return
Lavia's performance was compelling throughout, with his midfield industry, tackles, interceptions and well-spotted passes giving Chelsea's attackers a platform in the second half.
His partnership with Moises Caicedo has long been a hope for Chelsea supporters. Lavia has struggled with injuries since his 2023 move from Southampton, missing 33 games in his second season at the club after 42 matches out the previous campaign.
Last year saw significant progress in his fitness and availability, and early indications this term suggest another step forward. The 22-year-old's display against United gives him a strong case for greater involvement and responsibility at the club.
