Australia were denied a famous victory over Brazil when Rayan's header deep in added time cancelled out Nestory Irankunda's stunning free kick, securing a 1-1 draw in the international friendly at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville.
The 20-year-old Irankunda stole the limelight from the Brazilian stars on show, including Bruno Guimarães, Raphinha and Vinícius Júnior, with a magnificent 68th-minute free kick that dipped over the wall and left goalkeeper Hugo Souza with no chance.
Irankunda's Moment of Magic
When Paul Okon-Engstler won a free kick about 25 yards from goal, the sold-out crowd of 25,440 sensed what was coming. Irankunda, known for his confidence, delivered a perfectly placed effort that nestled in the back of the net, sparking back flips as he raced towards the corner flag.
Brazil responded with a late flurry, and their pressure paid off with the last kick of the game. Raphinha's corner found Rayan, whose powerful header ricocheted off the crossbar and crossed the line, despite a touch from Patrick Beach.
Mixed Emotions in the Dressing Room
Socceroos coach Tony Popovic admitted to mixed feelings after the match. "I think it's maybe a sign of progress if we are a bit disappointed, and I think the dressing room's a bit quiet," he said. "I think that's a good sign. Yes, of course, you're delighted that you get a point in a game like this against Brazil. But when you have the lead up until the last kick of the game, then of course you walk off a little bit deflated."
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said the draw did not feel like a defeat. "We could have won; we had our chances. We have to be patient. We fought back after conceding the goal and secured a deserved draw," he said.
Pitch Conditions Under Scrutiny
Both teams struggled with the pitch at Queensland Country Bank Stadium, which had not been used for 20 days since a North Queensland Cowboys NRL double-header. Ancelotti was critical of the surface: "[The pitch] was not good. The pitch … it was difficult to play on a pitch like this. And we hope to have a better pitch for the next game."
Despite the conditions, the Socceroos showed defensive heroics and periods of assertiveness in possession, giving fans reason for optimism under Popovic as they look ahead to future challenges.
